The Perfect Gift

Once you’ve settled down and have established a household, gifts often become cash or gift cards. Not because people put less effort into it, but because settled people are well on their way to accumulating “stuff.”
Glenn and I did not even get the obligatory three toasters when we got married – people correctly assumed we’d lived together for years and already had nested. (Ironically we could have used one toaster – ours broke the week before we wedded!)

I struggle when people ask me what I’d like for the holidays or my birthday, since I have a hard time spending money frivolously on myself. I know I need socks, but my family draws the line at such pragmatic presents. And I’ll admit a plastic swathed package of tube socks isn’t really exciting to unwrap. I’m pretty fond of the handmade gifts – I wear the hat my friend Lisa knitted a couple of years ago everyday. One year the boys gave my mother-in-law a chainsaw for Mother’s Day… honestly, she loved it.

This is what I got as an early birthday present this year:

Oh my goodness - look at my cute ears!!

Her name is Aspen and she’s a year and a half Lamancha cross doe. She’s possibly bred to a Saanan buck. She’ll be due in April, which would be great for my lactation curve, since I’m expecting the rest of my girls to kid in February.

Talk about an absolutely perfect gift – I love her!
